In fact, the early twentieth century birthed a slew of the opposite of what we consider gender colors today. Ladies’ Home Journal published an article in 1918 saying that the rules were for boys to wear pink while girls sported blue. The logic was that pink was a stronger color while blue was more delicate and dainty. At this point in society, it was well accepted that pink was masculine while blue represented femininity. This social norm was in place until the 1940s. The baby boomers saw the beginning of today’s gender color combinations. Throughout history, the clothing trends for both genders depended on how clothing gurus understood the trends of shoppers at any given point. Experts say that these clothing manufacturers could have easily flipped the roles, which would drastically change today’s rigid gender fashion norms.
